Ancient DNA and understanding European genetic history

The last decade witnessed progresses in ancient DNA studies that would have seemed impossible just a few years earlier. Together with colleagues historians, archeologists, anthropologists and geneticists from Romania, Spain and Sweden, we try to contribute to the understanding of human European populations by studying ancient DNA samples from the current teritory of Romania. In the figure below, the Upper Palaeolithic skull from Pestera Muierii dated approximately 35.000 years ago is shown, which is currently being sequenced by our team of collaborators.
